The majestic Alps of Switzerland, the rolling green hills of Ireland, and the stunning turquoise water of Thailand draw millions of tourists every year. These countries are obviously beautiful since we see gorgeous pictures everywhere, but which countries are lacking in the looks department? Locals and travelers on a recent online message board voted these locales as some of the least picturesque countries in the world. Do you agree?
Nauru
Nauru is a small island in the Pacific Ocean located northwest of Australia. Despite its seemingly ideal location, Nauru has been devastated by phosphate mining and military operations. One commenter mentioned, “There’s one spot of natural beauty left, and the rest of the land has been mined to oblivion.”
Kuwait
Kuwait is a small country located in the Middle East, bordering Iraq and Saudi Arabia. One traveler said, “The other gulf countries have buildings. Kuwait is just desert on desert and Kuwait City .. is meh.”
Denmark
“Copenhagen has some cool architecture, but nothing special compared to other European cities, and the landscape outside of the cities is pretty flat and uninspiring,” said one user. Although this country has many cultural attractions, like colorful buildings, meandering canals, and museums, many visitors complain that the scenery isn’t much to write home about.
Moldova
Moldova is a small Eastern European country between Romania and Ukraine. A traveler remarked, “It is alright, there’s not really any spot that’s geographically stunning.”
The Netherlands
With Amsterdam being an internationally popular tourist destination located in The Netherlands, you’d think it might be more visually appealing. One local said, “It’s just an alluvial plain from several rivers. It’s all flat and man-made. There is virtually no actual nature. All the forests are man-made too. The cities and villages can be nice, but it’s not a beautiful country. Source: I’m Dutch.”
Hungary
With its historically rich capital of Budapest, Hungary has its fair share of cultural relevance, but some think the country doesn’t offer much in terms of scenery. “It’s just a big plain. Only referring to nature, otherwise Budapest is awesome and definitely worth visiting,” said one visitor.
Singapore
The small Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore has many technological advancements, impressive shopping, and incredible skyscrapers. Despite these modern achievements, some visitors say it’s too man-made and lacking in natural beauty.
Paraguay
This South American country located between Argentina and Brazil leaves something to be desired when compared with its neighbors, according to some visitors. One user said, “underwhelming in terms of natural beauty/variety.”
Dubai
Before the 1960’s this middle eastern nation wasn’t very developed and only hosted a few desert settlements. Once oil was discovered, which brought more wealth into the country, modern amenities began to sprout up until it became the international tourist destination that it is today. One visitor said, “Just sand and buildings everywhere. Not to mention everything you see in pictures are all man made.”
Poland
“I took a train that went through the polish countryside and it was probably the plainest scenery I’ve witnessed on a long distance train. That said, it wasn’t ugly,” said one user. Larger Polish cities like Warsaw and Krakow have many activities and cultural sights to see, but in terms of natural beauty, it wouldn’t be the first choice for many travelers.
Uruguay
“I’m sure there are some beautiful areas in the country, but it seems that 99% of Uruguay is just ranch and pasture land,” said one commenter. Uruguay sits along the Atlantic coast but doesn’t draw the same tourist numbers as the more famous bordering country of Brazil, with its famous beach cities of Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro.
Belarus
One local said, “flat, no coastline and nobody knows anything of Belarus.” This former soviet country is located in Eastern Europe and shares a border with Russia. Perhaps the lackluster reviews when it comes to beauty is why tourism isn’t a big business in Belarus.
