I don’t know if I could name just one country as the most beautiful. Having traveled to many places, I’ve witnessed a variety of wonders, from the magical waterfalls of Hawaii to the majestic Alps of Switzerland. There are too many incredible places out there to pick just one.
A recent message board discussion had people from all over the world throwing their two cents in. These are the most mentioned countries people agreed had the most to offer when it comes to natural beauty.
Iceland
Iceland draws travelers from all over for its incredible landscapes. With glaciers, hot springs, waterfalls, blue lakes, volcanoes, and lava fields, it looks like something from another planet. At 103,000 km², it earns its nickname “Land of Fire and Ice.”
Summer offers nearly 24 hours of daylight, perfect for exploring. Winter dazzles with more snow and the Northern Lights. Just be ready—it’s pricey, but camping and cooking can help keep costs down. Your biggest expenses will be flights and car rental….so start saving now!
Chile
Anyone who has been to Chile would agree that its geography is unbeatable, with its long, narrow strip of land creating wild variations in climate and terrain. It’s no wonder Torres del Paine is on so many bucket lists. Those three granite spires draw travelers from across the globe!
If I could, I’d love to do a road trip through Chile—from the Atacama Desert in the north to the Pacific Ocean in the south. And don’t forget the Andes mountains running the entire length of this amazing country. It’s a journey worth taking, no doubt!
New Zealand
This country might have more sheep than people, but that’s probably why it’s so gorgeous–unspoiled land! New Zealand will wow you with alpine mountains, rainforests, fjords, volcanoes, beaches, and islands all packed into one small country. Add in hot springs, unique wildlife, and charming towns, and it’s a dream come true.
You’re never more than 90 miles from a beach, which is reason enough to visit! The backcountry trails and Department of Conservation huts are great for adventure, plus the glowworm caves are a must-see.
Switzerland
Switzerland is like a real-life postcard, with Instagram-worthy Alpine peaks and sparkling lakes. You can hike the famous Matterhorn or visit fairytale castles like Château de Chillon by Lake Geneva. But if you love fresh mountain air and picture-perfect villages, head straight for the Jungfrau Region.
No matter when you visit, Switzerland’s charm shines through. In Summer, you can enjoy marvelous sunsets from places like Lugano’s Monte Brè, while winter turns the country into a wonderland of snow with ski slopes and frozen lakes to explore.
Croatia
Croatia’s coastline is a magnet for beach lovers. Travelers flock to the Dalmatian Coast, which has over 1,200 islands, hidden bays, and secret spots.
If you’re looking for the most famous beach, it’s got to be Zlatni Rat. The water changes from turquoise to dark blue in just a few meters, and ancient pine trees provide natural shade. The coolest part is that the beach shape-shifts with the wind and tide, sometimes even forming a small pool. It’s one of the few places where it might even snow on the beach!
Nepal
Believe it or not, Nepal is home to eight of the ten tallest mountains in the world, with Mount Everest towering above them all. The country also offers the rugged Mustang desert, ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, sky caves, and the lush jungles of Chitwan and Bardiya, where Bengal tigers and rhinos roam. The royal temples and palaces of Kathmandu are a must-see for any traveler.
The real charm of Nepal lies in its people. Nepalese are known for their warmth and hospitality. Visitors often rave about their kindness, always smiling and sharing a laugh.
China
With everything from tropical beaches to towering mountains, jungles, lakes, endless plains, deserts, and the sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie, China has it all. Many don’t know that the country even shares Mt. Everest with Nepal!
Here’s a tip from travelers: go in the off-season for fewer crowds and better prices. But if you’re up for an adventure, visiting during the Chinese New Year would be an unforgettable experience, complete with colorful parades, amazing food, and epic celebrations.
United States
As one of the few largest countries in the world, the U.S. has a huge variety of landscapes to offer. We have the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Oregon’s redwoods, the Everglades in Florida, California’s beaches, Alaska’s Kenai Fjords, the Great Lakes, the Badlands in South Dakota, and Hawaii’s beaches and volcanoes.
This country has some of the world’s most amazing geography, hands down. The only downside is that it’ll take a very long vacation to see it all! Why not try a road trip across the U.S. to take it all in?
Costa Rica
Costa Rica draws singles, couples, and families alike with its 30 national parks, eco-chic resorts, rainforests, rivers, and amazing wildlife. Nature feels up close here, from hummingbirds and iguanas to sea turtles and sloths. Travelers are in awe of Arenal Volcano—a favorite spot and one of Costa Rica’s 60 volcanoes.
It’s the perfect blend of jungle, ocean, and mountains. If you’re wondering when to go, December to April is ideal, with the driest, sunniest days.
India
When I found out Kerala, a state in India, is called “God’s Own Country,” I had to know why. The legend says Lord Parshuram, an incarnation of Vishnu, flung his axe into the sea to create land for his followers, and that land became Kerala. Myth or not, it’s pretty magical.
But India’s beauty goes beyond myths. It has towering peaks, scorching deserts, lush rainforests, vast mangroves, and vibrant tribal lands. Imagine hanging off a train through tea valleys or trekking to ancient shrines. Traveling here means stepping way outside your comfort zone—but that’s what makes it memorable!
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is one incredible country on the Balkan Peninsula with a surprising amount to offer. You’ll find landscapes here that rival even Switzerland’s.
Hiking in the summer, skiing in Jahorina or Bjelašnica in winter, and rafting on the Neretva River near Konjic are just a few of the can’t-miss adventures. And here’s a bonus—Bosnia’s known for friendly people, fantastic food, and great beer. It’s definitely worth the trip!
French Polynesia
French Polynesia is not technically a country but an overseas territory. Still, it has to be on the list. Visitors often say it’s the kind of place you wish you could stay forever—an absolute paradise. You will see clear turquoise water, lush greenery, locals strumming ukuleles as you stroll by, women in colorful sarongs, and a friendly “bonjour” from everyone you meet.
Can you believe it’s made up of 118 islands spread across 2 million square miles? The Society Islands, like Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea, are the most famous. Staying here isn’t cheap, but the beauty is worth every penny.
