10 Underrated TV Shows That Deserve A Reboot

Who doesn’t love a bit of nostalgia? Reboots are like a fresh take on an old favorite. They either turn into a spin-off following one character from the original cast in a new setting or fast-forward to show us where the whole gang ended up in modern times. As cheesy as it is, I actually loved the Full House reboot Fuller House and thought they stayed true to the original while bringing in modern elements.

Now, I get it if you’re one of those who think, “Enough with the reboots already!” It’s hard to believe that any classic TV show could be rebooted well. But just think for a second—what if they actually nailed it?

Think about the stories we’ve missed out on. Don’t you want that long-awaited ending tied up neatly after all these years? Or what about seeing your favorite character back on screen for more adventures?

A recent online thread had people buzzing about the underrated TV shows that deserve a reboot. But one thing’s for sure—if they’re going to do it, let’s hope they do it right!

Firefly

It’s no surprise that Firefly fans are still hoping for season two. The characters are so beloved, and the world-building in that universe just begs for more stories. Who wouldn’t want to go back into that rich, wild space adventure?

Seeing the crew a decade or two later would be amazing—imagine older Mal, Jayne, and Inara dealing with middle-aged aches and pains. These characters are so dear to our hearts that watching them navigate life again would be like catching up with old friends!

Space: Above and Beyond

Space: Above and Beyond is a gem for sci-fi fans, but it allegedly came with a hefty price tag—about $5 million per episode! Sadly, FOX canceled it after just one season in 1995, which is such a bummer.

A revisit could be amazing, but we wouldn’t want to erase the first season’s legacy. Imagine setting it further in the future with advanced faster-than-light travel and more pilots alongside the infantry. Plus, bringing back James Morrison would be a fantastic nod to longtime fans. Let’s see what they could do with those Hammerhead fighters!

Don’t Trust the B—- In Apartment 23

Despite only running for two seasons before getting canceled, I loved the self-deprecating humor of this sitcom. The best part was James Van Der Beek, of Dawson’s Creek fame, playing an overblown, arrogant, egotistical version of himself. The show follows the friction between two roommates who are complete opposites. One is an honest, small-town girl, while the other is a dishonest party girl.

Revisiting the same characters years later to see where they’ve ended up would be a fun trip. Considering the show’s sometimes dark humor, there would be no shortage of storylines considering the state of the world today!

Gilligan’s Island

Staying home sick, I always enjoyed watching the goofy Gilligan and his crew find themselves in all sorts of hilarious predicaments on that uncharted island. Even after all these years, the sitcom still holds up as a classic.

But imagine a reboot that takes a completely different approach—Gilligan’s Island with the castaways facing real starvation and dehydration instead of just funny mishaps. Suddenly, the lighthearted fun gives way to a dark struggle for survival. Instead of comical escapes, they’d grapple with real issues, and those coconuts and bananas would barely cut it.

Static Shock

If you’ve watched Static Shock, you probably still love it just as much as you did as a kid. This show really set the standard for comics. A teenage boy named Static zaps to fight crime as the coolest kid superhero.

Now, fans are eager for a series of animated Static Shock films similar to the Spider-Verse films. There’s so much potential, especially since he’s one of the few popular Black superheroes from back in the day. But if they make a new season, would Static be in his 30s or pick up where the 2000s left off?

The Adventures of Pete & Pete

The Adventures of Pete & Pete was hands down one of Nickelodeon’s best shows. Those two red-headed brothers with the same name? Adorable! The characters were quirky, the stories were fun, and who can forget that awesome theme song? I’d skip meals just to catch those opening credits!

Fans are itching for a reboot because they miss that perfect mix of humor, heart, and quirky imagination. They would love to see Pete and Pete grow up, face new challenges, and continue to find humor in the everyday.

My Name is Earl

I loved watching My Name is Earl, about the former criminal who won the lottery and set out to fix all his past mistakes. But I can’t get over how the show ended. Why would they leave us hanging?

Did you see the interview with creator Greg Garcia, when he shared that he would’ve ended the series with Earl stuck on a hard “list item”? It would’ve been perfect! Even though many are still doubtful it’ll happen (we won’t accept a forced ending!), now feels like the perfect time for a My Name is Earl finale revival.

Sliders

It’s a shame Sliders often gets overlooked in the sci-fi world or remembered for the wrong reasons (not everyone loved seasons 3 and 5). But who wouldn’t love to see a reboot on Netflix or Apple TV when it totally deserves one? But please, Sliders wouldn’t be the same without Jerry O’Connell!

A full reboot could be epic, especially with today’s sci-fi tech. Remember that episode where academic stars were the celebrities and libraries were packed? Such a cool spin on society’s values! I know plenty of fans who’d love to visit that alternate reality again.

All in the Family

All in the Family was a game-changer when it aired, forcing us to confront some harsh truths. Archie Bunker and George Jefferson had zero filters, tackling issues head-on, from racism to sexism and everything in between.

No other show addressed America’s realities quite like this sitcom from the 1970s. With today’s political climate, imagine the stories they could tell! If they found the right actor to capture that Carroll O’Connor magic, a reboot could really resonate. Who knows what it would look like now, but it’d definitely be something worth watching!

Columbo

In the 1970s, everyone fell in love with Peter Falk’s portrayal of the bumbling, loveable, yet whip-smart Detective Columbo. Each episode starts out with a murder mystery waiting to be solved while Columbo investigates. To the untrained eye, it might seem like he’s got no leads until he effortlessly pieces it all together by the end.

One genius discussion board commenter pitched It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day as the ideal Columbo for a reboot. Once I saw that suggestion, I couldn’t imagine it any other way. He would hit it out of the park!
