New Study Reveals the 11 Best Cities for Night Owls

Nashville, Tennessee, USA downtown skyline on the Cumberland River.

As a true night owl, I’d rather sleep in until 11 am and work until late than set my alarm and struggle through a grumpy morning. Most people who know me well know not to try to talk to me about anything serious in the morning while my brain isn’t fully powered up yet.

Night people like me come alive in the evening. They trade in early morning activities by embracing the after-hours—hitting up late-night markets, 24-hour diners, and all sorts of nocturnal fun. If you can’t add hours to the day, at least make the most of the night.

A new study surveyed 3,000 self-declared night owls and unearthed the top 150 spots across the U.S. that cater to my fellow evening fanatics. These hotspots boast vibrant night markets, round-the-clock eateries, and a mix of exciting activities that shine after sundown. Discover the top areas to find the ultimate nighttime adventures!

No place is known for nightlife more than Las Vegas. Go from dirt-cheap happy hours on Fremont Street to sipping high-end cocktails in luxury hotel lounges—all in one wild evening. Even in the middle of the night, the streets buzz with partiers, nightly light shows, live concerts, and endless entertainment. And if you’re tired of slots, try Circa, where the largest sports betting experience meets classic Vegas flair.

When the sun sets and neon signs flicker on, the fun in Downtown Las Vegas really starts. Just expect it to be louder, crazier, and more crowded.

French Quarter, New Orleans, LA

The French Quarter in New Orleans is like a town with two faces. By day, it’s a charming spot to learn history, visit museums, and browse antique shops. But once the sun sets, the whole place turns into one big party– with mardi gras being its claim to fame. Bourbon Street comes alive with jazz clubs, bars, and live music venues.

Unlike other states, there’s no “closing time” here since many bars and restaurants never close. You can eat, drink, and dance until the sun comes up, soaking in the late-night energy that only the big easy can deliver.

It’s no secret that New York is the city that never sleeps, and you can expect nothing less from South of Houston Street (SoHo). Locals love JIMMY, a chic rooftop bar 18 floors up at The James Hotel, perfect for after-work or pre-dinner cocktails. The legendary Vandam Sundays at the eco-themed Greenhouse is also a must-visit for a lively night out.

If that’s not enough, catch live music at City Winery or S.O.B.’s, then swing by the Comedy Cellar, where legends like Chris Rock and Sarah Silverman have graced the stage. With so much to do, you’ll wish the night could last longer.

Downtown Anchorage, Anchorage, AK

Anchorage presents a unique experience when it comes to night-time. If you’re visiting in the summer, the sun is out until around 11 pm. In December, it can be dark outside from about 3:45 pm to 10 am. So, if you like the idea of late-night sunshine or prolonged darkness, Anchorage has you covered. Try taking the four-hour Sunset Photo Safari to capture the stunning golden light just before sundown. Or scratch the magical Northern lights off of your bucket list!

You can also check out live music and craft brews in a local park or enjoy a comedy show with the locals. If you’re lucky, you might get to dance under the midnight sun at an outdoor summer music festival.

Savannah Historic District, Savannah, GA

Sure, the Savannah Historic District is pretty during the day, but if you’re a night owl, you’ll find it just as captivating. As the sun goes down, River Street awakens with live music spilling from pubs, bars, and nightclubs. If you want the cheapest drinks (as long as they hit the spot, right?), check out the Warehouse Bar & Grill. If you’re in the mood for some thrills, consider a ghost and gravestones tour

Just a heads-up: the cobblestone streets can be a bit uneven, so watch your step, especially if you’ve had a few drinks!

Old Colorado City, Colorado Springs, CO

If you’ve never heard of it, Old Colorado City might sound like a sleepy, old-timey country town, but it’s one of the best spots for night owls. After all, only in O.C.C. can you sing your heart out at Thunder and Buttons’ karaoke, grab late-night bites at Mother Muff’s, or explore Nova West’s arcade, complete with skeeball.

And what’s better than a summer evening in Old Colorado City? Go spend a night here, have fun late-night shopping, drink and eat at local pubs and restaurants, and groove to live music along Colorado Avenue.
