According to an online forum, seasoned travelers named their most cherished items when packing for a trip. You may be familiar with a few, but you’ll likely be surprised by some of the lesser-known travel essentials recommended by people who actually travel a lot.

It might not be the first thing you think to pack when traveling, but it can be very useful! One traveler says, “I often find accommodation has either insufficient or bizarrely placed outlets so it’s nice to have this to charge multiple devices.”

Noise-canceling Headphones

“They take up a lot of room but I would not be able to stand long flights without them,” says one user. With a wide range of prices and qualities, noise-canceling headphones are more accessible in recent years than they used to be and, according to seasoned travelers, they’re worth the expense.

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are something you could easily forget to pack, but they come in handy more than you think. “You never know when someone’s going to vomit, spill, have an accident, or when you need to stash away garbage. Ziplocks to carry leftovers,” says one travel enthusiast.

Scarf

A scarf can be especially useful if you’re traveling internationally, not only for weather changes but for other uses as well. One commenter says, “A big thin scarf- becomes a blanket, heat shield, towel, cover for religious sites, face wrap if it’s dusty or polluted, ties into a bag. Vital.”

Lady’s Urination Funnel

“As a woman, I also really want to point out how useful these reusable silicone funnels / female urination devices are, especially when I’m in places with no proper bathrooms,” says a seasoned female traveler. These revolutionary devices make it so that women can relieve themselves while standing up, all without exposing themselves.

A Hat

“Protect yourself from dangerous UV sun rays. I like a bucket hat. Fun, compact, and portable,” one user states. Certain hats pack better than others. There are also women’s sun hats that can roll into a small tube shape to take up less space in luggage.

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes were mentioned as vital to many frequent travelers. If you’ve never heard of them, they are various-sized fabric cube containers to organize and separate clothing. One user says, “Some people love ‘em some people hate ‘em. For me I know exactly what items go in what bags and it keeps me organized”

Hygiene Wipes

“I’ve become devoted to two sizes of hygiene wipes. The small ones for feeling fresh in the restroom are great, but the mega ones have been a game-changer. If I have long travel days or am going to be somewhere I may not have access to a shower for a couple days, they make such a difference, ” says one traveler.

Neck Pillow

You often see people on airplanes with these convenient neck pillows. They help make the cramped, uncomfortable plane ride more bearable, especially if it’s a long flight. The challenge is just remembering to bring it!

Eye Mask

An eye mask can be a huge help when trying to sleep on a flight where people might be turning their overhead lights on and off or watching their bright phone screens. Old sleep masks used to be thin and flimsy, but many brands now make extra comfortable, thick, soft ones that are worth getting if you’ll be using them a lot.
