The gypsum sand dunes of White Sands National Park were formed over thousands of years. The dunes were created when water dissolved the gypsum from the surrounding San Andres and Sacramento Mountains, and then deposited it in the Tularosa Basin. Wind and weathering shaped the sand into the dunes seen today.
